Steam, la plataforma de distribución digital de videojuegos creada por Valve Corporation (creadores de juegos como Half Life y Counter Strike) se encuentra en su momento más álgido desde su creación en 2003. Nació con el objetivo de actualizar parches y funcionalidades de los juegos propios de esta casa, pero poco a poco, compañías como Square Enix o Sega se interesaron en ella, pudiendo adquirir actualmente algo más de siete mil juegos disponibles en su plataforma. A continuación enumeramos los cinco juegos más descargados hasta el momento de este año 2017 a través de la plataforma, compatible con Microsoft Windows, Linux, PlayStation, Android e IOS.
1. DOTA 2
Desarrollado también por Valve Corporation, este videojuego enmarcado dentro de los MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) salió al mercado en el año 2013. Sus orígenes se encuentran en el mundo de Warcraft, concretamente en uno de los mapas de Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos: Defense of the Ancients (“DotA”). Esta es una de esas historias en las que se puede decir que nadie mejor que un amante de los videojuegos y jugador acérrimo para desarrollar un nuevo éxito. Conocido como “Eul”, este aficionado a Warcraft decide crear el que sería el mapa original del DotaA 1, con la única herramienta a su alcance que el propio editor de mapas de Blizzard. Con el paso de los años fue pasando por varias manos hasta que en 2011 se alejó definitivamente de Blizzard para alojarse en los dominios de Valve Corporation. Con una legión inmensa de seguidores y una comunidad afianzada y colaborativa, su éxito estaba asegurado.
2. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
Counter-Strike, franquicia creada en el año 1999 y una de las más rentables de Valve Corporation, no podía faltar en este ranking. En este caso se trata de la cuarta edición de esta serie, colaborando en su edición con también la existosa Hidden Path Entertainment, dos viejos amigos que unieron sus caminos allá por el 2009. Como el resto de la saga, se trata de un FPS (First Person Shooter) donde deberás elegir pertenecer al bando de los terroristas o al de sus persecutores. Su principal innovación con respecto a sus predecesoras es que toma nombres de armas reales.
3. Grand Theft Auto V
A diferencia de los dos primeros, este juego de acción fue desarrollado por la escocesa compañía Rockstar North, perteneciente al grupo Take –Two Interactive. El primer Grand Theft Auto salió al mercado en el año 1997, catapultando su éxito desde ese mismo instante. En concreto, este último es el segundo de la saga incluido en el conocido como universo HD, ambientado en la ficticia zona de Los Santos, con claras similitudes a la estadounidense ciudad de Los Ángeles.
4. ARK: Survival Evolved
ARK ha revolucionado el mundo de los videojuegos de supervivencia y aventura incluso antes de su lanzamiento. Tal y como han reconocido sus creadores, este éxito fue totalmente inesperado, contribuyendo por tanto a tener unas expectativas altísimas antes de salir a la venta. Es por ello que dicho lanzamiento se ha ido retrasando en varias ocasiones, añadiendo sobre la marcha nuevas criaturas y escenarios. Actualmente se puede adquirir un pase anticipado para PC, Xbox y desde junio del pasado año para PlayStation 4, plataforma en la cual ya han vendido más de un millón de copias. 5. Team Fortress 2
Id Software, una de las compañías desarrolladoras más influyentes y antiguas de la Dallas Gaming Mafia, es la responsable de la serie de videojuegos Quake, exitosa saga shooter que dará paso a Team Fortress como una extensión de software o mod. También estrecharon lazos con Valve, siendo considerados como uno de los padres de los videojuegos modernos. Lanzado en el año 2007, Team Fortress 2 ha ido ganando adeptos con el paso de los años, gracias en parte a una cuidada estrategia de marketing donde incluso han llegado a contar con una línea propia de cómics para ampliar la historia de los personajes y promociones puntuales donde poder probar el juego de forma gratuita. Desde el año 2011 se transforma en un Free-to-Play, sustentándose desde ese momento gracias a las cuotas mensuales y pagos adicionales por añadir determinadas características.
